AI assistant in the composer

3 min readWindowsAndroidPlusPremium

In short

In the message, open the AI tab of the sidebar (Ctrl+J) and ask it to write, rewrite, translate or proofread: the AI sees the subject and the text you wrote, never your signature, and the original email only when needed. Every suggestion is applied with a preview of the changes and can be undone. On Android, open it with “AI assistant” in the composer. It’s included in Plus and Premium.

The AI assistant lives in a sidebar on the right of the message window, next to the text you’re writing. It replaces the old Write with AI button and is available from Windows 1.14.0. On Android the same assistant is there from version 1.4.0, in a sheet that opens from the bottom.

The compose window with the AI sidebar open: chat with the assistant, quick actions such as Improve, Fix and Proofread, and the field to ask the AI

How do I open the assistant?#

Press AI in the message toolbar or Ctrl+J. The sidebar has two tabs, AI and Templates (see Templates). You can widen it by dragging its edge or shrink it to a thin strip with Collapse panel; when the window is narrow it opens as a panel over the text.

How do I ask the AI for something?#

  1. Open the AI tab with Ctrl+J.
  2. Type your request, for example “make it more formal” or “reply accepting and suggest Thursday”, or press a quick action.
  3. If you like, open Options and choose Tone, Length and Language.
  4. Check the suggestion and apply it to the message; if you change your mind, press Undo.

The conversation stays tied to the draft while the window is open, in memory only: New conversation starts over.

Which quick actions are there?#

Improve, Fix, More formal, Friendlier, Shorten, Expand, Translate, Suggest subject and Check errors. In replies and forwards you’ll also find Summarize original and Answer the questions, which replies point by point to the email you received.

How do I apply a suggestion?#

Choose where it goes: Replace text, At cursor, At the end or, for a suggested subject, Use as subject. Before replacing, you can see the words added and removed compared with your text. Your signature and quoted text stay where they are: the AI only works on the part you wrote. In HTML mode, suggestions are copied instead of applied.

How does proofreading work?#

Check errors highlights the mistakes it finds in the text, with a fix for each: press Apply for one, Apply all for all of them, or Ignore to leave it as is.

Can I get a suggestion while I type?#

Yes: in the text, press Ctrl+Space and the AI suggests how to continue the sentence. Tab accepts the suggestion, Esc dismisses it.

How do I use it on Android?#

From Android 1.4.0, above the message text you’ll find a bar with AI assistant and Templates. Tap AI assistant: the assistant opens in a sheet from the bottom, with the same chat, the same quick actions and the same proofreading as on the PC. Suggestions are applied to the message and you can undo them; to copy one of the assistant’s replies, press and hold it (“Press and hold the text to copy it”). What the AI reads and which plans include it are the same as on the PC.

What does the AI read, and what doesn’t it?#

The AI only receives what the request needs, and the sidebar tells you with “The AI reads:”:

  • sent: your request, the subject and the text you wrote yourself, and the earlier messages of the conversation about this draft;
  • only when needed: the original email, in replies and forwards. You can exclude it with the switch next to “The AI reads:”;
  • never: your signature, attachments, recipients and the rest of your mail. The quoted text at the bottom of a reply isn’t read as part of your draft.

The same rules as every Mailamber AI feature apply: your consent is required, the text goes through Mailamber’s servers to the AI providers only to generate the reply, it isn’t stored, and it’s never used to train models. If Mailamber has to temporarily switch off an AI feature, you’ll see “Copilot unavailable”.

Which plans include it?#

Plus and Premium, within your plan’s monthly AI limit (Premium’s is about 6 times larger): details in AI features. On the Free plan, the AI tab shows what the assistant can do and how to unlock it; templates remain available on every plan.
