Android notifications and battery settings

2 min readAndroidAll plans

In short

Mailamber checks your inbox in the background about every 15 minutes (Android decides the exact moment) and creates notifications right on the phone, with no notification server. If they arrive late, remove the battery restrictions for Mailamber in Android’s settings. From Android 1.4.0, opens and clicks on tracked emails arrive instead as real-time push notifications.

How do new mail notifications arrive?#

For new mail, Mailamber doesn’t use push notification servers: in keeping with its local-first architecture, the phone itself checks for mail. In the background the app syncs the inbox of each mailbox about every 15 minutes — the shortest interval Android allows apps, and the system may stretch it to save battery — and shows a notification for each new unread message, with sender and subject. Tap it to open the message.

With the app open, mail refreshes when you enter the inbox, when you switch folder or account, and when you pull the list down.

From Android 1.4.0, when many emails arrive together you get a single summary notification instead of one per message.

How do open and click notifications arrive?#

In real time, from Android 1.4.0: the first open and the first click of tracked emails arrive as push notifications, even with the app closed and without waiting for the 15-minute check. With the app open you see a banner at the top of the screen instead. In Settings → Notifications, Instant alerts on confirms that push is active; with Alerts from the app alerts follow the periodic check while the app is closed. Full details in Open, click and new mail notifications.

How do I set sound and quiet hours?#

In Settings → Notifications:

  • Notification sound: “Volume follows your phone’s system notification volume.”
  • Quiet hours: “During this window notifications arrive silently.” Choose From and To (10 PM to 8 AM by default).

From Android 1.4.0 there are six notification channels, split into the Mail and Tracking groups (full list), and Channels, sounds and style opens them directly. You can always customize them from Android Settings → Apps → Mailamber → Notifications too.

Which battery settings should I use?#

Many phones restrict background apps to save power, and notifications may arrive late or only when you open the app. For more timely notifications:

  1. Open Android Settings → Apps → Mailamber → Battery.
  2. Choose Unrestricted (on some phones “Don’t optimize” or “Allow background activity”).
  3. On phones with aggressive power saving (some Xiaomi, Huawei, Samsung, OnePlus models), also check that Mailamber isn’t among the “sleeping” or “deep sleeping” apps.

Are snooze and follow-up notifications different?#

Yes: when a snooze ends or a follow-up gets no reply, the notification is scheduled on the phone for the exact time, independently of the mail check. From Android 1.4.0 they also have dedicated channels, Snoozed messages and Follow-up reminders, so you can set their sound and importance separately.
