Using PEC (Italian certified email) in Mailamber
In short
You add a PEC mailbox like any other, with your PEC address and the mailbox password (not the customer-area one). If access is refused but webmail works, you almost always need the password for mail apps (Aruba with two-step verification) or IMAP/SMTP access must be enabled.
PEC (posta elettronica certificata, Italian certified email) is the Italian system that gives an email the same legal value as a registered letter with return receipt. In Mailamber it’s a first-class mailbox, on PC and Android.
How do I add my PEC mailbox?#
- Open Add account on your PC, or tap Add mailbox on your phone.
- Type your full PEC address, for example
name@pec.it. - In the Password field, enter the PEC mailbox password (see below which one).
- If you use Legalmail or TIM PEC, also fill in Username when your provider requires it.
- Press Add account: Mailamber detects the servers of the main providers on its own and checks access before saving.
Which password should I use?#
The PEC mailbox password, the one you use to sign in to the PEC webmail. The password for the provider’s customer area or control panel won’t work, even though sometimes they’re the same.
Some providers instead require a dedicated password for mail apps:
- Aruba PEC, if you turned on two-step verification;
- Namirial and Libero PEC, if you turned on two-step verification;
- TIM PEC, always (the “secondary password”);
- Poste Italiane’s Postecertifica, always (the password generated in the dashboard).
How to generate it is explained below, provider by provider.
Which servers do PEC providers use?#
Mailamber sets them up automatically when you add the mailbox. You only need them for manual setup, in Server settings on your PC or Advanced server settings on your phone. The username is your full PEC address, unless noted.

If your PEC is on a custom domain (for example info@pec.studio.it), use the servers of the provider that supplies it.
Aruba PEC: credentials rejected but webmail works?#
This is the most common case. Check these three things, in order:
- Two-step verification on (European PEC): your normal password won’t work in mail apps. Sign in to PEC account management (Gestione account PEC), open Sicurezza → Password per programmi di posta, press Attiva, copy the generated password and paste it into Mailamber. The password lasts 6 months: before it expires Aruba warns you and you can extend it or generate a new one (if so, update it in Mailamber too). Official Aruba guide (Italian).
- IMAP and SMTP enabled: without two-step verification your mailbox password works, but the protocols must be on. In PEC Webmail open Impostazioni → SMTP/POP/IMAP → Accessi and turn on IMAP and SMTP. They are on by default, but they may have been turned off. Official Aruba guide (Italian).
- Too many failed attempts: after several attempts with a wrong password, Aruba temporarily blocks access, webmail included. Wait before trying again (there’s no fixed duration) or reset your password with “Password dimenticata?”. Before retrying, close any other app still using the old password. Official Aruba guide (Italian).
The same applies to mailboxes on the Aruba domains arubapec.it, gigapec.it, mypec.eu and similar.
Legalmail and TIM PEC: which username?#
These two providers may require a username different from the address. Mailamber supports it: on PC the Username field appears by itself under the password when you type a Legalmail or TIM PEC address (for other addresses it’s in Server settings); on the phone the same field appears under the password or in the server settings. Leave it empty to use the address.
- Legalmail (InfoCert): the username is the User ID provided by InfoCert (for example
M7B123), together with the mailbox password. Official InfoCert guide (Italian). - TIM PEC: the username is your address followed by an asterisk and your webmail username, for example
mario.rossi@timpec.it*mario.rossi. As the password you need the secondary password, generated at devicepassword.pectim.it (sign in as in webmail, with the OTP code): the webmail password doesn’t work in mail apps.
What about other providers?#
- Postecert (Poste Italiane): username = full address, password = the same as the Postecert webmail. Official settings (Italian).
- Postecertifica (Poste Italiane): generate the password for mail apps in your Postecertifica dashboard with Genera password; it isn’t necessarily your webmail password.
- Register: username = full PEC address (old codes like
HRE5920are no longer accepted), mailbox password. Official Register guide (Italian). - Namirial: allow access from mail apps in the webmail, Impostazioni → Sicurezza e dati di contatto → Client di posta (turn on IMAP and SMTP and save). With two-step verification, create an app password in Sicurezza e dati di contatto → Password applicativa: it is shown only once. Official Namirial guide (Italian).
- Actalis: username = full address, password = the same as the Actalis PEC webmail. Since 2024 the service is run by ArubaPEC, but the servers are still Actalis’s.
- Libero PEC: username = full address; with two-step verification use the app password generated in the Libero Mail PEC settings. Official Libero guide (Italian).
Troubleshooting#
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “The mail server (IMAP) rejected the sign-in: check your email address and password.”, but webmail works | Two-step verification on | Generate your provider’s password for mail apps and use it |
| Access refused on Aruba even with the right password | IMAP or SMTP turned off | PEC Webmail → Impostazioni → SMTP/POP/IMAP → Accessi |
| Refused after many attempts, webmail included | Temporary block for too many attempts | Wait or reset the password, then update it everywhere |
| Access refused with Legalmail | The User ID is required as the username | Fill in Username with your InfoCert User ID |
| Access refused with TIM PEC | Missing secondary password or wrong username format | Password from devicepassword.pectim.it and username address*user |
| Receiving works, sending doesn’t | SMTP turned off or different credentials | Enable SMTP in the mailbox settings; see IMAP and SMTP errors |
| It worked and stopped after a few months | Password for mail apps expired (Aruba: 6 months) | Extend it or generate a new one and update it in Mailamber |
| “Could not reach the server. Check host and port.” | Wrong server or port | Check the server table above |
How do I recognize PEC messages?#
In the message list, PEC messages carry the PEC tag. Opening a certified message shows “Certified PEC message”; receipts are marked as PEC receipt with their category: Accepted, Taken in charge, Delivered or Delivery error.
What do Plus and Premium add?#
On the Free plan you receive and send PEC normally. With Plus and Premium you get full certification:
- acceptance and delivery receipts are automatically matched to the PEC you sent, so you don’t have to hunt for them in your mail;
- each receipt triggers a dedicated notification: “PEC accepted ✓”, “PEC delivered ✓✓” or “PEC: delivery error”;
- the reader shows the message’s event timeline.
On the Free plan, instead of certification you see the prompt “Unlock PEC certification (acceptance and delivery) with Plus”.
Do receipts stay on the server?#
Yes. Mailamber deletes nothing from the provider’s server: receipts stay in your PEC mailbox just as in webmail. If you need them in court or for a public authority, download or archive them as your provider advises.
Can I use Mailamber outside Italy?#
Of course. PEC is an Italian service: outside Italy Mailamber works as a full-featured email client, with no limitations at all.
Still stuck?#
Open a ticket from the Support tab in your account area, or use Contact support in the app’s PEC guide: the PEC category, your provider and the app version are already filled in. Include the error message you see: never write your password in the ticket.
