How Mailamber’s local-first architecture works

2 min readWindowsAndroidAll plans

In short

Your emails, attachments and mailbox passwords stay on your device: the app talks directly to your provider over IMAP and SMTP. Mailamber’s servers, in the European Union, only handle your account, plan, devices and the services you choose to use, such as AI and tracking.

Does my email pass through Mailamber’s servers?#

No. The app on your PC or phone connects directly to your provider’s server over encrypted connections and downloads messages into a local database. There’s no cloud in between reading, indexing or storing your mail. Search, Smart Priority with local rules, Smart spaces and the attachment antivirus also run on your device.

What do Mailamber’s servers store?#

Only what the service needs:

  • your account: email, name, language, and your password as a hash (never in plain text);
  • your plan and subscription, add-ons, coupons;
  • the list of connected devices (name, system, app version, last sign-in);
  • support tickets;
  • for the features you choose: tracking data (for tracked emails only: subject, recipients, opens and clicks), AI usage data (not the content) and your consents.

The servers are in Germany, in the European Union. Payment data is handled by Paddle, not by us. All the details are in the privacy policy.

Where is the data stored on my PC?#

In the %APPDATA%\@mailamber\desktop folder of your Windows user: the message database is in db\mailamber.db, downloaded attachments in attachments\. The folder is protected by your Windows account permissions; mailbox passwords and tokens are additionally encrypted with Windows DPAPI (details).

What about the phone?#

On the phone, mail is kept in a database inside the app that other apps can’t access. Credentials are in the Android Keystore. Android’s automatic backup is turned off for Mailamber, so your data doesn’t end up in cloud copies.

If I uninstall the app, do I lose my mail?#

Your mail is always on your provider’s server: reinstall Mailamber, reconnect the mailbox and it downloads again. On Android, uninstalling the app deletes its local data. On Windows, if you also want to remove the local copy, delete the data folder mentioned above after uninstalling.
